My brand new single with Peter Sandberg ‘Eyrie’ is OUT NOW!
The word Eyrie means the nest of a bird of prey, such as an eagle or a falcon, and I think it’s a very fitting name for the piece. In its early form, the tune started as a ballad for the tin whistle, but as I began to work through ideas with Peter it quickly grew into this grand, cinematic moment that I feel takes the tin whistle to new places. The piece ebbs and flows to begin, and climaxes towards the middle of the song, which acts as a stark contrast and a dramatic change of pace from the very ethereal and slightly isolated whistle you can hear in the first half.
For me this song imagines the story of a wild eagle, at first flying calmly and quietly through the sky, before diving into a powerful soar. I remember when I was 14, a golden eagle, which was held in captivity, was taken out for a public show for guests at a hotel near my house, during which it flew off and went missing for several weeks. What followed was a large and days long search, through fields, forests and farmyards, and I distinctly remember being fascinated by all these people, including me, who had come together to search for such a wild and powerful animal. There’s something fascinating to me about the thought of such a menacing and awesome bird breaking free from everything it knew up until then, and experiencing life in the wild if only for a short moment, and so I very much put those feelings and memories into the feeling of this piece.
